FETE - From Expats to Experts

Project start date: 01/09/2014
Duration: 24 Months
Lead Partner: Crossing Borders (Denmark)
Project Partners: Centro Studi ed Iniziative Europeo (Italy), The People for Change Foundation (Malta),  Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers des Pays-de-la-Loire (France)

The People for Change Foundation is a partner in the project “From Expats to Experts: United Civil Society through Inclusion and Empowerment of Young Immigrants.” which targets sixty 18-30 year old young first generation immigrants mainly from non-EU countries who are currently living in the EU. The aim of the project is to provide each participant with the opportunity to gain and improve work experience and soft skills, take ownership and work on small scale projects beneficial for local communities in Malta, Italy, France and Denmark.
In addition, the project aims at capacity building of NGOs, social enterprises and public institutions in order to create space for dialogue about positive impacts of international immigration in civil society.

Objectives

The project aims to meet the needs for:
1. A broader debate about positive impacts of immigration in Europe and therefore improving mutually beneficial inclusion practice in European local communities
2. Young immigrants to gain entrepreneurial and other professional skills and work experience
3. Social enterprises and NGOs in Europe to empower international staff and benefit from their qualification and expertise
4. Communities in European cities to gain global perspectives and appreciate diversity
5. Reflection on benefits of immigration regarding demographic challenges in Europe

In order to address these needs the objectives are:
1. To increase the awareness of positive impacts of immigration in Europe,
2. To improve inclusion of immigrants within the labor market,
3. To use the capacity of NGOs and social enterprises as mediators and facilitators for creating dialogue between young immigrants and civil society
4. To create a space for dialogue and create a precedent for positive inclusion practices

The project will also develop a mentoring programme and a guide for mentors for better first generation immigrant inclusion, whilst organizing small projects that will benefit local communities.

Project Phases and Activities

The project is split into four phases. The first phase involves conducting research about inclusion. The second phase focuses on the implementation of a strategy to develop best practices and to design a model for inclusion and empowerment of young migrants. The third phase develops a training and internship system whilst developing a mentoring programme, and the final phase collects feedback from the project participants as well as through public debate.

PfC's Role

The People for Change Foundation will be conducting the initial research, as well as piloting some of the initiatives relating to hosting migrant internships and mentoring.
